My interest is the integration and development of resources and tools to effectively represent and integrate the knowledge in the biological and biomedical domains so it can be reasoned both by humans and computers, to provide the basis for hypothesis generation. I work within the framework of many international and interdisciplinary Consortia, such as UniProt (lead of curation group and text mining efforts at PIR), Protein Ontology (lead of curation team), and BioCreative (Workshop organizer since 2009). Activities in my group include biocuration; community outreach; digital curation and bibliography mapping; the development (in collaboration with text mining group) and evaluation of natural language processing tools to assist in retrieval and extraction of information about genes, proteins and miRNAs; and general bioinformatics/text mining support for other research groups.
I am currently the acting chair of the Library Faculty Senate Committee at University of Delaware.
